Keeping A Positive Mental Attitude
Bongino has shown a positive mental attitude as he reckons with his cancer, expressing how he feels upbeat. He shared with listeners after his diagnosis was confirmed, "I've received an overwhelming amount of support. Unfortunately, it is cancer. It's lymphoma the Hodgkin's type. But it is treatable."

Focusing on the good that his cancer is treatable will help Bongino as he goes through his cancer journey. And Bongino is not dwelling on this news, either. He told fans and listeners, “I have nothing to be depressed about. There's a treatment plan. Everybody's got their obstacles; this is just another one for me and [my wife]. I do have cancer, and that is hard for me to say."
Staying positive and not getting too down about a diagnosis may not seem to matter much, but it does. Take it from Dr. Zuri Murrell, a colorectal surgeon at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, who described the effect positivity has on his cancer patients. Dr. Murrell told SurvivorNet, “My patients who thrive, even with stage 4 cancer, from the time that they, about a month after they’re diagnosed, I kind of am pretty good at seeing who is going to be okay.”

He continued, “Now doesn’t that mean I’m good at saying that the cancer won’t grow. But I’m pretty good at telling what kind of patient are going to still have this attitude and probably going to live the longest, even with bad, bad disease. And those are patients who, they have gratitude in life.”
Bongino has been vocal in showing gratitude for his listeners, and we imagine that this gratitude will spill over to other areas, too. When Bongino shared his diagnosis with his listeners, he praised and assured them, "We'll be okay. I am optimistic. It's not some act I'm putting on for the show. I've got good doctors, good family, good support network, great friends, and the best audience in the business.”

One can only hope that his positive, grateful outlook has a positive impact on his cancer journey. As Dr. Murrell told us, “I believe that a positive attitude is what’s really important.”
Support Networks Through Cancer
In addition to a positive attitude, having the support of colleagues, friends, loved ones, and doctors, can go a long way. Support can be found through many outlets, and some cancer patients find more structured support tools, such as therapy or support groups, to be particularly useful. Objectivity from a therapist, or a support group can be a great way to gain or shift perspective.

Therapy can be especially useful for one-on-one work through complex emotions that accompany a cancer diagnosis, such as grief, anxiety, and even depression. Whatever emotions you experience after your diagnosis, know that they are valid, and that help is available to you. Surrounding yourself with support networks will make the cancer journey feel far from lonely.
