External beam radiation therapy delivers high doses of radiation to the tumor in the prostate. “Over the last ten to fifteen years, we have done remarkable things with our technology that allows us to aim much more carefully, reduce the amount radiation that nearby critical structures get, and thereby get a higher dose in, in a quicker period of time,” says Dr. Patrick Swift, a radiation oncologist and a Clinical Professor of Radiation Oncology at Stanford.
Studies have shown that the duration of time to deliver the radiation can be reduced from the traditional 9 weeks to a period of about 5 weeks with no change in efficacy.
