According to Jessica Perreau, a nurse practitioner at Texas Oncology in San Antonio, one of the common sexual side effects that women may experience after an ovarian cancer surgery includes vaginal shortening — meaning that, following the surgery, a woman’s vagina becomes shorter. For this side effect, a small tool called a vaginal dilator (usually available to purchase online if it is not already available at your doctor’s office).

Additionally, following an ovarian cancer surgery, many women might experience hormonal changes, such as decreased libido or menopausal symptoms like hot flashes and vaginal dryness. “In regard to decreased libido due to the altering of the hormone levels, usually we recommend spending time with your partner and communicating with them, letting them know how you feel,” says Perreau, adding that, if necessary, many oncologists can refer you to a therapist who specializes in helping women address these issues. Usually, it’s important to note, doctors and care teams try to offer non-hormonal treatment methods for sexual side effects as opposed to hormone medications.
