Overdone in the Sun?
- Laguna Beach reality star Kristin Cavallari, 34, created some waves online posting about Skin Cancer Awareness Month’s notorious enemy: the sun.
- The mom of three showcased a photo of herself with stark white tan lines peaking through a sexy black two-piece with the caption “Tan Lines are In,” which triggered a follower fighting skin cancer who thinks the star should be more responsible.
- If you’re going to be out in the sun, a leading expert says that it is a must to use the proper sunscreen, broad spectrum (which blocks UVB + UVA rays), and apply it every two hours.
The Uncommon James jewelry designer, who has three kids with ex-husband Jay Cutler, former Chicago Bears quarterback, wrote some comments along with a photo that ignited some followers.

Pro-KCAV fans jumped all over the woman in the star’s defense, stating that the tan lines could be from a spray tan, calling her a “Karen” (well, her name does happen to be Karen), and saying that they’re pretty sure she was being funny because the lines are obviously from wearing a different style bathing suit.

Another follower agreed that it was an irresponsible post: “Being cautious should be promoted by ‘celebrities’ which Kristin is not but whatever, not being careless, then when she has half an ear removed we're all supposed to feel sorry for her?”
“It’s like promoting smoking,” said another.
The Nashville-based star posted the photos while on a trip to Palm Springs, Calif. Cavallari went to high school in Laguna Beach and rose to fame when the first season of the now-rebooted show premiered in 2004. The fashion designer was actually born in Colorado and moved to Illinois with her mother when her parents divorced, then ultimately decided to live with dad in Laguna Beach.

Also, it’s safe to say that Cav’s white lines are not due to a spray tan, judging from a 2018 anti-spray tan post by the mom on Twitter, unless she has turned over a new leaf since?
Did I get a spray tan?! HELL NO. Haven't had a spray tan since I did DWTS 7 years ago ahhh thank you. 😂@velvetsedge #VeryCavallari

Can I Still Have Fun in the Sun?
If you’re going to be out in the sun this summer, make sure to do it safely and sparingly. Dermatologists recommend using a minimum of SPF 30 to protect yourself from harmful sun rays and reapplying every two hours.
However, it’s important to note that if you're not choosing the right type or not using enough, it may not be working. Dr. Cecilia Larocca, a dermatologist at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, recommends a broad spectrum sunscreen covering both UVB and UVA rays.

Ultraviolet B rays are what give you sunburn, and ultraviolet A rays are more associated with skin aging.
“If it’s not listed on the sunscreen bottle, chances are it doesn’t provide that,” Dr. Larocca explains. “When I go out in the sun, I make sure that I wear a hat, I wear sunglasses that are polarized, and I use sunscreen regularly.
She reiterates that the biggest mistake people make is not reapplying sunscreen every two hours.
“And so when I’m out there, I have my sunscreen in hand and I make sure that my SPF– and I happen to use SPF 60– I put it on twice a day every day whenever I’m out for extended periods of time.”
