Nancy Iverson spoke with
SurvivorNet about what led her to seek treatment, and how she leaned on family and friends for support during her cancer journey. Iverson was visiting her daughter in Chicago when she first noticed symptoms of
ovarian cancer; she decided to go to the emergency room. “I was very bloated and I looked like I was pregnant. Very shortly thereafter, I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer.”
The San Diego native decided to stay with her daughter in Chicago. Iverson is also a widow, so being with family in Chicago meant a lot to her during her diagnosis. “I decided that was the best place for me to be. I ended up living with my daughter and her family for almost two months. Iverson says she was “completely dependent on them.”
Read More Her daughter, who works full-time and has two young children, cared for her, and so did her other daughter, who lives in Pittsburgh. She traveled from Pittsburgh to Chicago each weekend be there for her mom. When Iverson transitioned back to San Diego, her friends really stepped up to the plate to help her manage. They visited her in the hospital, bought her groceries, brought her food, and were a wonderful source of support. “I couldn’t have asked for a better support system,” she said.
