How quickly a woman can leave the hospital after ovarian cancer surgery will depend on what type of surgery she had. Doctors do recommend, however, that women get up and moving around as quickly as they can — and simply avoid any strenuous activity for awhile. Previously, women would be required to stay in the hospital after surgery for up to two weeks. However, with modern medicine, a lot of women can go home within 3 to 7 days.
Dr. Dennis DeSimone, a gynecologic oncologist at Zangmeister Cancer Center, says that he recommends that his patients get up and walk as much as possible after surgery. He told SurvivorNet that if patients feel up to going out to the mall or a friend’s house, etc., he’s all for it. However, any activity that involves too much physical exertion should probably be avoided. It could take as much as 6 weeks to 3 months for women to completely recover.
