Just in case your doctor didn’t get the memo that many people seem to be getting diagnosed with various types of cancers at an earlier age these days (thyroid, colon, breast, etc.), it’s imperative that you use your voice like these young women have. The textbooks and medical journals of yesterday are often not the current programming with many more factors affecting the health of younger generations.

If you are labeled as “paranoid,” that can sometimes be a good thing, within reason of course. It’s better to be safe than sorry! After all, the worst thing that can happen is a negative test or scan, although often times it’s imperative to get another set of professional eyes on those scans. Again, just to be safe. If Abi Phillips had backed down and listened to her first doctor, she would have continued living with thyroid cancer, completely unaware.
What is Thyroid Cancer?
Thyroid cancer is a disease that begins in the thyroid gland, which is at the base of the neck. The cancer will often present itself as a large bump (tumor) in the neck. It remains unclear what causes the disease. Some symptoms of thyroid cancer can be mistaken for a common cold.
Treatments for this type of cancer can include surgery, hormone therapy, radioactive iodine, radiation, and chemotherapy. Symptoms of thyroid cancer include the following, outlined by the American Cancer Society (ACS):

- A lump in the neck, sometimes growing quickly
- Swelling in the neck
- Pain in the front of the neck, sometimes going up to the ears
