Most women with ovarian cancer will receive surgery as the first step in their treatment journey, followed by chemotherapy. But sometimes, it can be better to reverse the order -- that is, start with chemo first, then follow with surgery. It all depends on the individual woman and how widely her ovarian cancer has spread.

There are several options for surgery when it comes to ovarian cancer -- a woman may get an exploratory laparotomy, a total abdominal hysterectomy, or debulking surgery. The type of surgery and technique will depend on how widespread the cancer is.

While ovarian cancer surgery can come with some side effects, doctors do recommend that women attempt to resume normal every day activities - like walking around and eating and drinking - as quickly as they can. Light physical activity is totally OK, and even encouraged, in the days and weeks following surgery.
