There are several options your medical team can choose from when giving chemotherapy after ovarian cancer surgery. Some women may get intraperitoneal chemo (or “belly bath” chemo), which is infused directly into the abdomen, and others may get a completely intravenous drug treatment.
The IP method, it's worth noting, is not necessarily an option for all women with ovarian cancer, and not all oncologists have the capability of administering it. Some oncologists do also point to studies showing similar results with chemo that is administered the standard way (through an IV). That is to say, there are definitely benefits for IP chemo, but not all oncologists agree that it is a more effective option than IV chemo. In the end, it really depends on your unique cancer, how widely it has spread, and how much of it your surgeon has been able to remove during your operation.
