Before Lisa Mitchell was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, she had all the symptoms — back pain, bloating, and irregular bleeding — but her doctor kept brushing her off. The doctor said Lisa was simply too young to have ovarian cancer. But she did have it, and she was diagnosed with stage 3c ovarian cancer — the whole situation taught Lisa an important lesson about advocating for your own health.

Read More “It’s very possible that had I not been persistent with the doctors, and getting someone to listen to me, that I would not be here right now,” Lisa said. “During the time of all of the discovery and the testing, I knew that I had all of the symptoms of ovarian cancer, but my doctor kept telling me, ‘You’re young, there’s no reason to think that.'” Now that she’s a 6-year survivor, Lisa has some advice for other women who may be experiencing similar symptoms or even dealing with a new cancer diagnosis. “Don’t be afraid to advocate for yourself. You know your body; listen to it,” Lisa said. “Follow your intuition. I’m doing great, I’m a 6-year survivor, and I’m thriving.”
